Your Mauritania tour begins in Nouakchott, the country's sun-bleached Atlantic capital. After airport pickup, your guide leads an orientation drive through the capital's fishing port, central market and wide desert avenues before a welcome dinner where we brief you on the days ahead — including the overnight iron ore train ride that makes this trip unforgettable.

Leaving Nouakchott, we drive north into the Adrar region toward Atar, the historic caravan town that has served desert travelers for centuries. The tarmac gives way to open desert; watch for camel herds and the first golden dunes of the Sahara. Evening arrival in Atar, with time to explore its sand-colored old town.

A short morning drive from Atar brings you to Terjit, a lush palm oasis tucked into a rocky canyon where natural spring water pools beneath date palms — a striking, cooling contrast to the surrounding Sahara. After lunch and time to swim at Terjit, we transfer to Choum to board the iron ore train, a 2.5-kilometer freight train that hauls ore across the desert to the coast. Ride through the night beneath the stars as the Sahara rolls past — the signature experience of any Mauritania tour.

The iron ore train reaches Nouadhibou at dawn. Disembark, freshen up, and explore Mauritania's second city and its famous ship graveyard on the Atlantic coast before an afternoon transfer (road or domestic flight) back to Nouakchott, where your tour concludes.

Is the iron ore train ride included in this Mauritania tour?
Yes. Boarding the iron ore train at Choum and the overnight ride to Nouadhibou are built into Day 3 of this tour, with a guide travelling with you. Rules for independent travellers have tightened in recent years, so riding with a local operator who arranges the boarding is the most reliable way to do it.
Where do I ride on the iron ore train?
Most travellers ride on top of the iron ore in an open wagon — the classic experience, under the stars. Your guide briefs you on where to sit, what to wear and how to stay comfortable during the night.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
November to March. Days are warm rather than scorching and desert nights are cool, which is ideal for the Terjit oasis, the Adrar drive and a night on the train. Summer (June to September) is extremely hot and not recommended.
Can this iron ore train tour be customised?
