This Mauritania tour begins with arrival in Nouakchott. Settle in, then join your guide for a first look at the capital — its fishing port, markets and Atlantic seafront — before a welcome dinner and trip briefing.

We head north out of Nouakchott and into the Adrar region toward Atar, the traditional gateway to Mauritania's desert heartland. Stop along the way for tea with nomadic families and views over the pre-Saharan plateau. Overnight in Atar.

From Atar, a scenic desert track leads to Chinguetti, once the seventh-holiest city in Islam and a key caravan stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. We spend the full day here: wandering the stone old town, visiting family-run manuscript libraries with centuries-old Islamic texts, and walking the dunes that now spill into the streets of the historic quarter.
